Is India’s Major Lithium Discovery Means a New Era of EVs?

Today, Lithium is vastly becoming an essential element in electric vehicle (EV) batteries due to it effective role in the green energy transition. Due to its peculiar attributes, lithium has become a mainstay in powering devices, ranging from our smartphones to electric cars. As of 2023, the global demand for lithium increased due to its increased usability and the geopolitical intricacies surrounding its extraction. A recent survey by the Geological Survey of India, in regards to the discovery of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium resources in the Salal-Haimana region of Jammu & Kashmir, caused an uproar in the automotive industry of electric vehicles and battery production. This finding isn’t just about discovering mineral wealth but one that has the ability to change the dynamics of EV production in India and world at large.

Today, the lithium market dominated by a host of nations, especially China, Australia, and Chile. Chile tops with approximately 9.2 million tonnes of lithium reserves, followed closely by Australia, Argentina, and China. Since India uncovers a significant lithium reserve, the nation has become an important player in the global lithium market, sitting second in terms of reserves. This has further given hope to industry experts and EV enthusiasts that India can improve its electric vehicle infrastructure and production capabilities.

However, the environmental hazard of lithium cannot be overlooked either. Geographical activities like mining can lead to ecological degradation, raising concerns about water pollution, biodiversity loss, and soil degradation. Research states that lithium extraction is water-intensive, which requires about 2.2 million liters of water to produce just one tonne of lithium. Hence, the sustainability of mining practices in Jammu & Kashmir is a crucial element surrounding this finding.

Conversely, the gains of this lithium finds are huge. With India’s proposed plan to electrify 30% of its vehicle population by the end of this decade, there may be limited access and reliance on import, which further decreases production costs for EV batteries. What this entails is that lower battery costs is equivalent to more affordable electric vehicles, facilitating more global acceptance among consumers and businesses alike.

Industry leaders like Pratik Kamdar from Neuron Energy have mentioned that this finding can act as a catalyst for growth within India’s battery manufacturing sector. As the nation diversify more into manufacturing lithium batteries, self-sufficiency in lithium production can place India as a leading player in the EV market. More so, the CEO of Chargeup, Varun Goenka, stated the importance of the findings in making EVs more affordable, which could be instrumental in achieving India’s net-zero carbon goal set for 2070.

This lithium discovery in Jammu & Kashmir highlights the important moment in India’s journey toward electrification. With the ability to change the dynamics of the EV market, this finding comes with both opportunities and challenges. Therefore, the future will rely hugely on how India balances the urgent need for lithium with worthy mining practices and community engagement. As the dynamics of the automotive world changes to greener energy solutions, lithium will be at the forefront of this change, thereby, making India’s new discovery an important asset for years to come.

The extraction of lithium from the newly discovered reserves is not an easy procedure when intensely looked at. Experts have stated that reserves in the Reasi district are mainly clay deposits, which can be quite a difficult challenge. Unlike brine or hard rock deposits, there haven’t been successful clay deposits extraction methods for commercial purpose. The intricacies involved in mining clay resources can negatively affect the timeline for when these lithium reserves can become beneficial to India’s electric vehicle ambitions.

Furthermore, the Geological Survey of India stated that geological surveys are also important in determining viable mining sites. This would possibly require a significant amount of investment in mining infrastructure and several years to achieve. Experts has also mentioned that it is worthy to be aware of the challenges that can hinder its advancement in the EV sector even though it has lots of potentials..

Moreover, Jammu & Kashmir socio-political landscape adds more to its intricacies. Since it is a sensitive political context, any large-scale industrial project in this region will surely raise concerns among local communities. Therefore, the government must involve with locals to ensure that their voices are heard and that their rights are respected. This move will foster growth for smooth mining operations.

Another pressing concern is the seismic activity in the Reasi district. As initially mentioned, this area is situated in a high-damage risk zone, which can negatively affect the smooth process of mining. Experts mentioned that mining in such an unstable region could lead to tragic ends—not just for the mining operations but for the communities living nearby.

With these challenges in mind, it’s crucial to focus on the potential benefits that will spring up from a successful lithium mining industry in India. If the process is effectively carried out without challenges, it will certainly boost the nation’s economy.  Cheaper access to lithium equates to lower battery prices, hence, making electric vehicles more affordable for the average consumer. Industry experts are hopeful this could facilitate widespread adoption of electric vehicles, thereby aligning with India’s ambitious goal of 30% vehicle electrification by 2030.

The discovery of lithium resources will place India as a major player in the lithium supply chain, which will certainly reduce its dependence on imports and encourage local manufacturing of batteries. As the CEO of Chargeup mentioned, a robust local lithium industry would be crucial in achieving the government’s net-zero carbon goal by 2070, which will place the nation as a major competitor in the global green economy.
