The Hefty New BMW M5: A Glimpse into the Future of High-Performance Hybrids

Following the recent update in the automotive industry, the upcoming BMW M5, codenamed G90 has been widely discussed. A source on the Bimmer Post forum stated that the new model of this iconic supercar will replace XM’s plug-in hybrid V8 configuration, with a maximum output of 718 horsepower. However, this hasn’t come without challenges as reports states that the weight of the new M5 is as high as 5368 pounds. What this means is that the 453 kilograms (998 pounds) is heavier than its predecessor F90.

The Challenges of Weight in the New M5

The question that comes in the heart of many is, ‘Why does weight gain significantly?’ well, this is because of its strict emission regulations, especially in the European Union, that propel car manufacturers towards producing electric cars. The powertrain of the new M5 comprises of a twin turbo 4.4-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor, which is a response to these environmental requirements. While the total output can be said to be impressive, it adds most of the lithium-ion battery pack, with a usable energy of 18.6 kWh.

Notwithstanding these concerns, it is worthy to keep in mind that the M5 will still be 606 pounds (275 kilograms) lighter than the XM and only 287 pounds (130 kilograms) heavier than the dual motor electric vehicle i5 M60. The prospective size of this new M5 will also be higher, measuring 1.4 inches (36 millimeters) longer and 2.7 inches (70 millimeters) wider than the standard 5 Series sedan.

Insiders further revealed that the M5 will have 20 inch wheels at the front and 21 inch wheels at the rear, and a 2027 model will have a panoramic visual head up display. The manufacture date for this vehicle is scheduled to begin in July and November of this year, with both models expected to be produced until February 2031.

The Promise and Potential of the New M5

The proposed weight of the new M5 can pose as a worry, especially as heavier vehicles have higher requirements for suspension, tires, powertrain, and brakes, not to mention accelerated wear and tear. However, BMW has been known to have a long history of balancing performance and luxury, and the M5 represents that identity.

Inasmuch as the proposed weight may draw further attention, it is worthy to note that electrification is the direction forward that also comes with challenges of managing additional quality. The plug-in hybrid system of the next generation M5 proves BMW’s commitment to performance and sustainability. These features creates a balance between driving pleasure and environmental responsibility, and BMW looks to prove that these two factors can coexist.
